Rochdale Hornets Women admitted into Women's Northern League 2
Rochdale Hornets Women have been successful in their application to join the Women's Northern League 2 ahead of the 2025 season.
The relaunch of the Hornets Women is part of a strategic development that marks a significant milestone in the club’s history.
The new team will operate under a modernised club model and will be structured in all aspects of its operation to take advantage of the resources of the wider organisation.
The Hornets Women will be based at the club’s new Balderstone Park community hub, also known as ‘The Hive’, where they will train and play.
The new facility has been described as a “unique blueprint” in rugby league. Officially opening in July 2024, the facility includes two purpose-built RFL specification grass pitches, changing rooms and match officials’ rooms, a cafe and community room which are fully disability compliant.
Next season, the Hornets Women will compete in the Women's Northern League 2 alongside the following seven teams:
- Ashton Bears
- Batley ARLFC
- Heysham Atoms
- Rochdale Mayfield
- Thatto Heath
- Ulverston
- Wigan St Judes
Rochdale Hornets Women head coach Ben Bird said: "It's really exciting to see things coming together ahead of the new season.
”Matt, Andy and everyone at the club have been so supportive. With confirmed acceptance into League 2, I'm looking forward to pulling together what looks to be an exciting squad of players.
“The potential is huge, but it's important for us to first build a positive, supportive environment for the ladies.”
General manager Matt Rigby said: “As a club, we are thrilled to have been admitted to the Northern League 2.
“The last few months of re-igniting the women's section is paying off, and we are excited to be playing competitive fixtures at ‘The Hive’ in 2025 and beyond. The hard work continues, and we look forward to welcoming supporters to our fixtures in the new year.
“I'd also like to place on record our congratulations to Rochdale Mayfield in being admitted to the league structure as well.
“Having two competitive women's teams within Rochdale just shows the appetite for women’s & girls rugby league in the borough, and it goes without saying that this is a proud moment for our town.”
