Joe Taira re-joins Hornets for third spell

Rochdale Hornets have announced the return of Fijian prop forward Joe Taira, who has signed a one-year deal with the club ahead of the 2025 season.

The 35-year-old has made 104 Hornets appearances over two stints, having started his professional career at the club back in 2016.

In between, Taira enjoyed a two-year spell at Betfred Championship side Batley Bulldogs.

He left the Hornets for a second time at the end of the 2022 season, and has since been playing in the community game at local amateur side Rochdale Mayfield.

In the autumn of 2022, Taira also made a solitary appearance for the Fiji national team, representing his nation against England in a World Cup warm-up match.

Upon his return to the Crown Oil Arena, Taira said: “I’m buzzing to be back at the place I started my professional career, and I find it fitting that it’s where I will end it.

“The boys were unlucky last season but showed some really promising signs, and I believe I can help them to make the next step.

“Coming towards the end of my career, I just want to prove my worth one more time, get stuck into pre-season training and go from there.”

Rochdale Hornets head coach Gary Thornton said: “I’m really pleased to have Joe back in the fold. He’s obviously no stranger to Hornets fans, and I’m sure they will be delighted to see him back.

“His uncompromising style in attack and defence will be a big benefit for us next year.

“He was a popular and well respected member of the group in his previous spells at the club, and with his experience, he will be a welcome addition to our 2025 squad.”
