Martyn Ridyard pens new one-year contract

Rochdale Hornets half-back Martyn Ridyard has agreed a new one-year deal with the club.

The new contract will see him remain at the Crown Oil Arena for a second successive season, having initially arrived from Oldham ahead of the 2024 campaign.

The 38-year-old made 14 appearances during his debut year at the Hornets, scoring once and kicking 69 goals.

His 2024 campaign was unfortunately cut short due to a serious ankle injury suffered in Round 16 against Workington.

Ridyard will be moving into the 17th season of his professional career and, despite his veteran status in the game, shows no intention of slowing down having signed a new deal at the club. 

“I’m really happy to be sticking around for at least another season,” he said.

“It was a really easy decision and one I’m looking forward to. I’d like to thank Andy Mazey and Gary Thornton for the opportunity to continue this journey.

“Even though we had a poor end to the season, it’s been a great one overall, and we are hoping to build on that next year.

“Gary’s let me come in and help with the coaching side of things, and I’ve really enjoyed working alongside him.

“The hard work starts now as we prepare for next season, and I’m looking forward to getting back to it.”

“We are delighted that Martyn will go round again, as he has been integral to the progress made this year. 

“Everyone who knows Riddy knows he’s an infectious character who lives and breathes the sport. He’s done all there is to do at Championship and League 1 level, and had a successful spell in Super League also.

“I believe Martyn has a bright future as a head coach, and he could not be working with and learning from anyone better than GT at this stage of his coaching development.”
