HORNETS SIGN SION JONES
Rochdale Hornets can confirm the signing of Welsh forward Sion Jones for 2023.
The 25-year-old, who played six times for Hunslet last year, joins the Hornets a few games into the 2023 season.
Jones, who represented Wales once since 2018, brings experience having spent time at Halifax.
The Welshman joins the powerful forward pack head coach Gary Thornton has assembled, and Jones cannot wait to get started.
“It’s been a long time coming, and it feels good to finally get it over the line," he said.
“I’m getting stuck into another season, season eight now and I’m starting to get that kind of love for the game back which went missing a bit.
“So, I have Gary [Thornton] to thank for that, also Alan Kilshaw. I also see what’s happening with IMG and the recent success of the World Cup as big draws to get back into it.
“With a young squad I bring a little experience, then on the field and in training I like to think I add a bit of intensity to everything, including being a bit of a handful.”
Chairman Andy Mazey is pleased with the side his Hornets have, which Jones adds too, and he said: “Sion is a well-built front rower with Championship experience from his time with Halifax and has also spent time playing in League One competition.
“Gary [Thornton] has bought him onboard and into the group as he’s another good professional and will strengthen the squad.
“He will also create even more competition for places within the team.
“Welcome to the Hornets family, Sion.”
Head coach Thornton is 'delighted' with the addition of Jones and feels he will add a lot of strength to the Hornets forward pack.
He said: "Sion is a powerful forward who likes to get the ball in his hands and he will help us with our pack going forward.
"We are happy to secure him for the rest of the season and hope he makes a great impact."
