Hornets sign Rochdale-born Cole Connolly from Cornwall

Rochdale Hornets is delighted to announce the signing of hooker Cole Connolly, for the 2023 season.

Having started this season at nearby Rochdale Mayfield, Connolly joined the newly-formed Cornwall and was impressive in first season in Betfred League 1.

The Rochdale-born 22-year-old is now relishing the opportunity to continue his development at his hometown club.

He said: “When the opportunity to sign for Rochdale came around, it was an offer I couldn’t refuse.

“I’m proud to be a Rochdale lad and that was a big factor in me signing with the club.

“Having spoke to Gary about his plans, for this team, I can’t wait to get playing and run out in front of my hometown.

“It’s a challenge I’m really looking forward to and hopefully I can help the team to improve, off the back of an impressive 2022 season.”

Connolly, who can also play in the halves, already has good memories of the Crown Oil Arena as well; he scored the winning try in Hopwood Hall’s National Cup Final triumph back in 2018.

And, Hornets head coach Gary Thornton is hoping Cole can make more memories at Spotland.

“Cole is a local lad who has been playing at Rochdale Mayfield. He took up the challenge and dipped his toe into semi-professional rugby league at Cornwall, joining them halfway through the season, and he adapted really well to the step up in skill levels, intensity and physicality.

“Cole has shown enough to prove he is now ready to kick on at this level and realise his potential.  He will come in and give us options at either half back or hooker, and I’m sure he will grasp his chance with both hands.

“I know he is absolutely buzzing to be given the chance to represent his hometown club, and will be working extra hard to cement his place in our matchday 17 on a regular basis.”

Chairman Andy Mazey is excited to have bought in an promising local talent.

“I was delighted to sponsor Cole when he started the year at Rochdale Mayfield, in the NCL, and followed his progress with interest when he signed at Cornwall and stepped into the professional game.

“He’s a Rochdale lad who’s really keen to pull on the Hornets shirt so we are delighted to bring him closer to home, and get him onboard with his hometown club for 2023.

“Welcome to Hornets, Cole.”

Connolly is the second player to switch Cornwall for Hornets this week, after Joe Purcell made the move north yesterday.
