Statement: Medical incident during Thatto Heath Crusaders fixture

During the opening stages of Sunday's Northern Women’s League Two clash between Thatto Heath Crusaders and Rochdale Hornets, the game was stopped due to a medical incident involving the match referee.

Suffering from intense chest pains, the game was immediately paused so medical personnel could intervene.

The referee was subsequently transported to the local hospital before undergoing further testing.

Thankfully, the club received an update from the referee which confirmed that a serious medical issue, as was first feared, had been ruled out following further tests.

The referee has been referred to cardiology for additional checks, and was subsequently discharged from hospital later in the day.

Given the immediate concern caused by the nature of the incident, we would like to give special recognition to club physio Chelsea Gore and her counterparts at Thatto Heath, as well as the coaches who responded quickly to the situation.

The fixture, which was abandoned after just four minutes, will be replayed in its entirety.

A new date will be announced in due course.
