Ross Whitmore joins Rochdale Hornets

Rochdale Hornets have signed hooker Ross Whitmore from Hunslet for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Whitmore played a starring role in his former club's rise to the Betfred Championship, making 26 appearances last season as they earned promotion via the Betfred League 1 play-offs.

A successful 2024 campaign culminated in Whitmore being selected to represent Scotland for the first time, featuring in the Bravehearts' 36-6 defeat to Ireland at the end of October.

He has featured six times in 2025, operating primarily at hooker.

Prior to his time at Hunslet, the 25-year-old previously spent three seasons at Doncaster, where he made 45 appearances in all competitions.

Whitmore’s arrival comes at the right time for the club, with fellow hooker Oli Burton sustaining a foot injury which will keep him out for around six weeks.

On the move, Whitmore said: “When I got the opportunity to work with Gary Thornton, it was a hard one to turn down. I’ve heard only good things.

“The main thing I want out of this season is getting my enjoyment back for the game, and with the lads we have, I’m sure that will happen in no time.

“The lads are all working towards a place in the top four, and I’m confident that we can achieve that together.”

Rochdale Hornets head coach Gary Thornton said: “We got the opportunity to bring Ross in from Hunslet at a key stage of the season, and with Oli picking up an injury, he is a welcome addition.

“Ross has plenty of experience in this division with Doncaster, and was an integral part of Hunslet’s promotion last season.

“He will give us options at hooker and 13, and is a big addition to the group.”
