Josh Johnson joins Hornets for 2025

Rochdale Hornets have announced the signing of former Betfred Super League prop forward Josh Johnson for the 2025 season.

Johnson arrives on a one-year deal from Oldham.

The 30-year-old made 16 bench appearances for the Betfred League 1 champions this season, featuring twice against Gary Thornton’s Hornets.

Johnson has previously lined up for the likes of Huddersfield Giants, Hull KR and Salford Red Devils, during a well-travelled career which has seen him ply his trade for some of the game’s biggest names.

The no-nonsense forward will also follow in the footsteps of his grandfather Kenneth Payne, who represented the club between 1966-67 and played against a touring Australian team whilst at the Hornets.

He becomes the second new addition to the squad ahead of 2025 and was presented to supporters at half-time during Sunday’s play-off clash with Hunslet at the Crown Oil Arena.

“I’m really happy to have signed for the Hornets,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to working with Gary Thornton and the lads, and there are a few familiar faces which is always good.

“Having spoken with Andy Mazey and Gary about where the club is going, I wanted to be a part of the journey next season.”

Rochdale Hornets head coach Gary Thornton said: “JJ is a fantastic addition to our 2025 squad, and shows the ambition and direction we are moving in as a club and a team.

“He has Super League and Championship experience in abundance, and will bring quality to our pack and become a leader in this group.

“I like his energy and enthusiasm, and I know he will be a great fit for us next season.”

Chairman Andy Mazey said: “Gary and I were made aware that Josh may be available for 2025 and moved quickly to open talks with his representatives.

“As part of our recruitment process, Gary and I did a lot of due diligence on Josh, and everything pointed towards him being a perfect fit to add to an already strong forward pack, and a progressive team and group.

“What was refreshing for me is Josh clearly recognised the progress we are making as a club, and wanted to be part of it. It was clear he also wants to be somewhere where he can play a lot at this stage of his career, enjoy his rugby and show what he is capable of.

“Having just turned 30, we are getting a middle in his prime years, with a wealth of experience in Super League and Championship.

“I know he is also excited to be following in his grandfather’s footsteps by playing for Hornets, and we all look forward to welcoming Josh and his family to our club.”
