Ben Forster previews regular season finale

Rochdale Hornets second-rower Ben Forster believes his side have what it takes to secure a third-place finish in the Betfred League 1 table.

With one regular season game to go, Gary Thornton’s side sit a point clear of Hunslet following last weekend’s hard-fought 28-10 victory over North Wales Crusaders.

The Hornets need just one point to secure third place and home advantage in their qualifying play-off match against Hunslet, but to do so, they’ll have to do what Hunslet were unable to on Sunday, and avoid defeat against second-placed Keighley Cougars.

The Hornets haven’t beaten the Cougars in their two meetings this season, but did secure a 20-20 draw at Cougar Park last month.

Looking ahead to their final day match-up, Forster said: “They pose threats all over the field. They have strong outside backs and a good pack, and we’ll have to match their enthusiasm.

“If we play to our potential, there’s no reason why we can’t get the two points and secure the home play-off tie.

“Hopefully there will be a big turnout from the Rochdale fans and we can give them something to cheer about.”

Last Sunday marked the Hornets’ third straight win, with Gary Thornton’s side aiming to build momentum heading into the play-offs.

Performances have improved significantly since the start of the season, notably against the sides in-and-around the top of the table. 

Even in their most recent loss to Oldham, the Hornets battled well, and a four-point defeat marked a big improvement on their 54-6 loss at Boundary Park in Round 3.

“I think as a group we’ve all come together and are peaking at the right time,” said Forster, whose individual performances earned him a place in the latest Betfred League 1 Team of the Month.

“We’ve had some tough games, and I think we learnt a lot and are improving each week. 

“This is a great group of lads, and that’s helped me enjoy my rugby even more.”
