Ben Killan re-signs for 2023

Rochdale Hornets is proud to announce the re-signing of highly-rated prop forward Ben Killan, for the 2023 season.

Killan, who is a product of Huddersfield Giants’ academy, joined Hornets from the Super League outfit in November of last year and has caught the eye in his debut season.

Despite fierce competition in the front row, from the likes of Fuifui Moimoi and Gavin Bennion, the 19-year-old has been a regular in the matchday 17 and impacted games consistently with his powerful ball-carrying.

Killan, who also played for nearby Saddleworth Rangers, is delighted to have re-signed.

He said: “I want to thank Andy and Gary for the opportunity to re-sign for the 2023 season.

“I’ve loved my first year at Hornets. It’s been a new challenge and I’ve played with and against some class players.

“I think in the most recent weeks I’ve loved it more than ever, with some big wins coming in, which has really set my mind on staying. Playing under Gary is really enjoyable as I’m getting good game time and I think that’s key for me at this stage of my career.

“I’m looking forward to improving next year and giving my all for the club. Hopefully, we can finish this season strong and then really kick on into next year.”

Thornton, who was a big factor in Killan’s decision to stay, is extremely pleased to have got the deal done.

He said: “Ben has had an outstanding first season with us coming straight from academy rugby.

“He is a front rower who plays big minutes and has made massive improvements since the start of the season. He carries strong, and defends tough, so I’m absolutely delighted he has committed for another year.

“He has a bright future ahead if he continues with his hard work ethic and dedication. Ben’s a great lad too, and it’s key that we keep good players who are also good people.”

Andy Mazey, Hornets’ Chairman, has also been impressed with Killan’s start to professional rugby league.

He said: “Ben has taken to the professional game like a duck to water this season. Since joining from Huddersfield Giants he has trained hard, worked hard, played hard and he never takes a backward step.

“He’s another talented young player with a bright future and he is a credit to his family and the club. So, I’m really pleased that Killer will play a key part in Gary’s team for 2023.”

Killan follows in the footsteps of Dan Nixon, who yesterday committed his services to the club for another year as well.
