A tribute to Brian Belfield

Rochdale Hornets is incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong Hornets supporter and former director, Brian Belfield.

A former police officer, Brian was involved in a number of roles at Hornets stretching back half a century.

Many will remember he was involved in the running of the famous Hornets’ Nest Bar at the Athletic Grounds.

Following many years as a lottery collector, more recently he worked alongside the lottery admin team with his pal, Jon Bramall.

Together they took on the role of organising kit for the first team ahead of matches.

Brian was instrumental in the creation of Hornets as a supporters owned trust in 2010 and went on to serve as a Director on the new club’s board.

He leaves behind a loving wife, Olwyn, sons Michael and Ian and their families and a swathe of friends and fellow supporters who will miss him dearly.

CEO Steve Kerr paid tribute: “Brian was an integral part of the team, much loved, and a well-respected member of the club.

“We have received countless messages of condolence from far and wide, including from former coaches, players, board members and fans.

“It is fair to say we are all devastated by the news - Brian meant so much to everyone.

“He loved Hornets, always put others first and I, for one, enjoyed listening to his light-hearted jokes.

“Brian was one of the good guys, a true gentleman with the utmost integrity.

“I’ll miss him around the club, and I’m pleased to have called Brian my friend.”

As the saying goes, a club is only as good as its members and in Brian Belfield we had one of the best.

Brian’s funeral will be held at 11:50am on Wednesday 26th January at Rochdale Cemetery, Bury Road, OL11 4DG.

Afterwards at The Ashcroft, formerly Whitworth Civic Hall, Market Street, Whitworth OL12 8DP.

Family Flowers only please.

In lieu of flowers, you may wish to make a donation to The British Heart Foundation, either on the day or through Bridgefold Independent Funeral Service, Mill House, Mellor Street, Rochdale OL11 5BU.

The funeral is open to all fans but we ask that you please wear a face covering, unless you are exempt.

Rest In Peace.
